Blood and Gifts

The Gordon College Department of Theatre Arts presents their fall play Blood and Gifts—a political thriller that explores how the United States got involved in the war in Afghanistan. The show is directed by Professor of Theatre Arts Jeffrey Miller and runs October 27-28, 31 and November 1–4, 2017 in the Margaret Jensen Theatre. Set in the 1980s in the midst of the Cold War, Blood and Gifts follows CIA operative Jim Warnock and America’s involvement in the conflict with the Soviet Union during their occupation of Afghanistan. Taking place in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Washington D.C., the play reveals the myriad political and personal tensions resulting from such complex international drama. Told from the points of view of Americans, Soviets, Afghans, Pakistanis and the British, Blood and Gifts raises questions about the fine line between allies and enemies, friendship and espionage. Blood and Gifts is performed by an ensemble of 15 Gordon College students, some playing multiple roles. The show is staged in traverse with seating on both side of the College’s black box theatre, which allows for an intimate and engaging theatre experience. The play first premiered in 2010 at the National Theatre in London and was written by playwright J.T. Rogers, who recently won a Tony Award for his new play, Oslo. Blood and Gifts opens The Gordon Theatre Departments 2017-2018 main stage season and will be followed in the winter and spring with the musical, She Loves Me, and William Shakespeare's As You Like It.
