Oliver O’Donovan, Professor Emeritus of Christian Ethics and Practical Theology at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, gave the inaugural Malcolm Reid Lecture at Gordon College Thursday, October 23, 2014. O’Donovan's talk, titled “Action and Rest,” is part of the ongoing Faith Seeking Understanding lecture series hosted by The Center for Faith and Inquiry at Gordon College. The lecture begins at 4:30 p.m. in MacDonald Auditorium in the Ken Olsen Science Center; the public is invited to a pre-lecture reception at 4 p.m. in the ground floor Loggia of the building.
“Oliver O’Donovan is quite simply one of the wisest and most accomplished Anglican theologians living today,” Center for Faith and Inquiry Director Tal Howard said. “His work on ethics, and Christian political ethics in particular, will have a lasting legacy.”
A published author and distinguished lecturer around the globe, O’Donovan is a past president of the Society for the Study of Christian Ethics, and has been a Fellow of the British Academy since 2000. “A servant of both the church and the academy,” Howard said, “he is a wonderfully apt person to launch the Malcolm Reid lectureship.”
A Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at Gordon College, Reverend Dr. Malcolm Reid has demonstrated an admirable commitment to first-order Christian intellectual life, even as he has upheld the importance that both mind and heart should be joined in service to the Church. Reid currently serves as a priest at Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church in Danvers, Massachusetts. Howard describes him as “one of the ablest and most influential professors of philosophy in Gordon’s history.”
“The lives and vocations of generations of Gordon students have been shaped by his faithful witness to the fact that belief and intellect are not at odds, but can complement one another in myriad ways for the good of church and academy alike,” Howard said. “It is Gordon’s honor that we are able to recognize Dr. Reid with this annual lecture.”
