Biologos Foundation and Gordon College Host Inaugural Workshop On Science and Faith

WENHAM, MA—Discussions on the origins of man can be tense and divisive. In an effort to invite dialogue around such topics, Gordon College—in collaboration with the BioLogos Foundation and the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU)— gathered scholars for a three-day workshop on science and faith.

Over fifty scientists, graduate students, pastors, and academics from institutions including Princeton, New York University, Harvard and many colleges within the CCCU came together June 9-June 12 at Gordon College in Wenham, MA. This inaugural workshop, "A Dialogue on Creation" featured roundtable discussions, paper presentations, and question and answer sessions.

“We wanted to provide a relaxed, open setting near Boston to explore issues related to origins with leading scholars who believe in the harmony of science and faith,” said Karl Giberson, author, physicist and vice-president of the BioLogos Foundation, an organization founded by Francis Collins, head of the National Institutes of Health and former director of the Human Genome Project. BioLogos addresses the central themes of science and religion by emphasizing the compatibility of Christian faith with scientific discoveries about the origins of the universe, life, and humanity.

The senior staff of the BioLogos Foundation—Peter Enns, Darrel Falk and Giberson, all of who have written acclaimed books on this topic—lead the three-day program. Biblical scholar Enns addressed questions on Genesis and the Old Testament, and Falk, president of Biologos and biology professor at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA, explored whether theistic evolution and evangelical Christianity can co-exist. Giberson will offer two talks on, “The Creation-Evolution Controversy: How did we get into this mess?”

Calvin College provost, Claudia Beversluis, delivered the opening plenary address on Wednesday, June 9, “With Awe, Humility, and Hope: Evolutionary Theory at Christian Colleges.” On Thursday, June 10, at 7:30–9, Enns’ talk, “Genesis is an Ancient Book” was open to the public.

“This gathering provides a unique opportunity to explore questions at the intersection of science and faith with peers who are exploring these same questions,” said R. Judson Carlberg, president of Gordon College and board member of the BioLogos Foundation. “We hope this inaugural event will be the first of many more to come.”
