Global Opportunities Week Brings Missionaries to Campus

WENHAM, MA- During the week of October 25-30 Gordon College will host a number of mission and development workers, along with conversations centered on poverty and local outreach, for its annual Global Opportunities Week.

"The goal of Global Opportunities Week has been to encourage global awareness and involvement in missions," said Kirk McClelland, director of service learning and missions at Gordon College. "Our focus has changed over the past couple of years in that we are inviting our long-term partners, people Gordon works with in missions, to share their community with us."

Dr. Isaias Riviera, director of custodial services at Gordon College and pastor in Lawrence, Massachusetts, will be the keynote speaker and will address missions and the local church. Eight other missionaries will set up booths in Lane Student Center and briefly speak about their organizations in different classes during the week.

Forums to discuss issues related to missions will take place at 5:15 in Chester's Place every night Oct. 27-30. Topics include "Missions in your own backyard" by visiting missionaries; "Global Village Night" with the Global Education Department; "Root and Systematic Causes of Poverty" by Claire Sullivan; Lynn pastor and social activist; and "Practicing Fair Trade" by the Boston Faith and Justice Network.

"These missionaries will be hosted in classes and various gatherings in order to give students the opportunity to connect with them," said McClelland. "We have a variety of missionaries, and we hope students will see they can direct any area of study--even sports and computer science--into missions."

The Gordon community will also be participating in two off-campus weekend events: the annual Boston Common Gulu Walk at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, and the North Shore Bazaar at Community Covenant Church in Peabody on Sunday, October 26.
