Imaging God the Father in the History of Art: Matthew Milliner Speaking at Gordon College

WENHAM, MA—Gordon College welcomes Matthew Milliner to campus. A rising star in the field of art history, Milliner shows the surprising connections between art history and theology, and how art helps us interpret Scripture.

This event is the inaugural Walter and Darlene Hansen Lecture. As an extension of the Lothlórien chair at Gordon College, this lecture seeks to bring a distinguished artist or scholar to campus to address a topic at the intersection of theology, culture and the fine arts and/or theology and contemporary culture.

On Monday, October 28 at 4:30 p.m. (4 p.m. reception), Matthew Milliner will speak on the topic, “Imaging God the Father in the History of Art.” This event will take place in the Ken Olsen Science Center, Chairman’s Room. This lecture is free and open to the public.

“Matthew Milliner is a much-needed voice in the field of art history––with a refreshing irreverence for the settled attitudes and opinions of the art world,” says Bruce Herman, Lothlórien Distinguished Chair of Fine Art at Gordon College. “With a graduate background in theology and a doctorate from one of the premiere art history programs in the country, Dr. Milliner brings clarity and light to the complexities of theology and art. Quite simply, Matthew Milliner is a blast of fresh air, delivering new energy to the larger conversations of our culture, particularly with regard to art, faith, and the public square.”

Matthew J. Milliner teaches art history at Wheaton College. He is a graduate of Princeton University (M.A., Ph.D.), Princeton Theological Seminary (M.Div.), and Wheaton College (B.A.). His research explores how art functions as visual theology. His scholarly specialization is Byzantine and medieval art, with a focus on how such images inform contemporary visual culture. He has given scholarly presentations at University of Chicago (Symposium on Late Antiquity and Byzantium), American University (Feminist Art History Conference), the International Congress on Medieval Studies at Kalamazoo, the Byzantine Studies Association of North America and the Modern Greek Studies Association. He also publishes in more popular venues such as the Huffington Post, New Criterion, First Things, Books & Culture and more.
