Over the Easter weekend, Monica DeMello '16, a first-year psychology major at Gordon College, went home to be with the Lord. Monica, who wanted to work in the nursing and missions fields, was killed in a car crash on Route 44 in Lakeville, MA, not far from her home in Middleboro.
The Gordon College community will gather on Friday, April 5 at 3:30 p.m. for a memorial service honoring Monica's life, faith and service to others. The service will take place in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel—the heart of Gordon's campus.
Monica made a significant impact during her first year at Gordon. She forged friendships during Orientation weekend and her La Vida Discovery experience, and those new friends describe her as "genuine, caring and supportive." She sent hand-written cards to those she prayed for, and served students warm meals working the late-night shift in the Lane Student Center. Monica was passionate about missions; in January, she served on an outreach team to Northern Ireland with nine other Gordon students and trip advisor Neal Ericsson, director of operations for the Design Center. The experience had a vocational impact on Monica, who expressed to her friends and academic advisor that she felt drawn to change her major so she could prepare to work as a nurse through mission outreach.
A funeral mass is scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at the Annunciation of the Lord Parish in Taunton, MA. Visiting hours are from 2 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at the Taunton Funeral Home.
