Addressing the "Big Questions"

Dr. Owen Gingerich, Professor Emeritus of Astronomy and History of Science at Harvard University, visited Gordon in October to deliver the 2013 Herrmann Lectures on Faith and Science. The lectures are supported by a generous grant from the John Templeton Foundation, and are named in honor of Dr. Robert Herrmann, who throughout his distinguished teaching career at Gordon addressed “Big Questions” around the theme of science and religion.

Gingerich’s lectures considered the work of three giants of science—Nicolaus Copernicus, Charles Darwin, and Fred Hoyle—and concluded that science “is far more tangled with a humanistic or theological vision than we might expect.”

Paul Wason of the Templeton Foundation noted that Gingerich “neither simplifies nor weighs you down with all the facts at his command, but uses these facts to answer questions you might really have asked.”
