Wenham, MA—Between 1982 and 2012, Gloucester resident Bruce Herman, artist and Lothlórien Distinguished Chair in the Fine Arts at Gordon College, produced over 500 works of art reflecting his personal journey of creativity and faith. Now in a series of brief meditations and essays, accompanied by full-color reproductions of the art, Herman and his friend, G. Walter Hansen, New Testament scholar, have published a unique book entitled, Through Your Eyes: Dialogues on the Art of Bruce Herman.
To honor their new publication, Gordon College will host a book launch, discussion and signing with the authors on Monday, Oct. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Jenks Library Reference room. Copies of Through Your Eyes will be for sale at a discounted rate at this event only of $30.00 for all guests and $20.00 for college students. The event is free and open to the public.
“The artist is not the final authority on his work, and that’s where the conversation with Walter (Hansen) begins for me,” Herman said. “I needed a friend’s eyes, imagination, intellect, and voice to help uncover the meaning and value of the art work that I ‘create.’”
As a result, Through Your Eyes is written as a conversation between the two as they reflect upon and interpret Herman’s work over the past 30 years. The book reveals how a creative friendship influences and enriches the art-making process. Through dialogue, it explores seven major themes relevant to Herman’s pilgrimage in the often-confusing current art culture.
“Other voices, and other eyes will make meaning of our humble efforts,” Herman said. “That’s what this book is about: a larger conversation welcoming all of us to the table, where art and culture and faith intermingle deeply, bringing rich nourishment and energy to the cultural work of our day and for posterity.”
The book discussion and signing will precede the first Walter and Darlene Hansen Lecture also on Monday, Oct. 28, when Matthew Milliner, assistant professor of art history at Wheaton College, will speak on “Visual Heresy: Imagine the Father in the History of Art” at 4:30 p.m. in the Ken Olsen Science Center. A reception at 4 p.m. will take place before the lecture. Both events are free and open to the public.
