Annual Golf Digest Hot List Golf Club Measurements Completed

Four students recently spent several weeks working late nights in the Golf Lab in the basement of KOSC. The two freshmen, one sophomore and one junior were helping to complete Gordon College's annual contribution to the Golf Digest Hot List issue. Each year Golf Digest publishes an annual new equipment review as their February issue (the issue hits the stands on January 1st).

Students in the physics program at Gordon College help by taking technical measurements of the new clubs: they measure club geometries and mass properties, including moment-of-inertia, center-of-gravity and characteristic time. Once these data are taken and analyzed, a technical report is submitted to the editorial staff at Golf Digest for their own internal use. The staff at Golf Digest then use this technical information, along with robotic test data, feedback from players, golf shops and the Hot List technical panel to determine recommendations for the new clubs. This is one of several opportunities that Gordon physics and 3-2 engineering majors have to be involved in efforts that reach far beyond the campus borders. The annual Hot List issue is Golf Digest's single largest seller: each year some six million copies of the issue are sold worldwide.
