Actuarial Science

Overview

Do you want to apply your quantitative skills to careers in insurance, financial planning or risk assessment? Then, Gordon College’s Actuarial Science minor may be for you.

The Actuarial Science minor, especially when paired with a major such as math, finance or economics, will prepare you for the first actuary exam—which covers probability—and provide credentials you can count towards becoming an actuary (Validation by Educational Experience - VEE). While housed in Mathematics, our minor includes courses from the School of Business and is taught by faculty with experience in accounting, finance and risk analysis.

Why study actuarial science at Gordon?

By studying at Gordon, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from experienced faculty whose expertise spans the spectrum from mathematical theory to business practice. Our faculty are committed not only to teaching you the skills necessary for actuarial science but also to helping you understand the role of risk and insurance for individuals, organizations and communities. Here you’ll be equipped with detailed knowledge of the mathematics and probability at the core of actuarial calculations.

What can Christians bring to actuarial science?

Christians who possess strong technical skills and are guided by Biblical principles of ethics, service and caring for others can make a valuable contribution to the financial industry. In the actuarial field, they can bring a strong sense of ethical duty toward their customers who buy insurance. These values can guide them as actuaries to make ethical decisions when financial risk is involved and seek to address societal needs, while promoting fairness.
