Overview
Historically, the French language played an important role in diplomacy, literature and the arts. Today, it is the official language in close to 30 countries and the lingua franca of many others. Forbes reports that French is the language of the future, as it is projected to be the "most-spoken language in the world" by 2050.
The French minor at Gordon College will help you become proficient in the language of Molière, Pascal and Sartre so you'll be well-equipped to engage with Francophone cultures and individuals on both a local and global level. Inside Higher Ed reports that students studying French made far larger gains in writing, analytical and critical thinking skills than students in other areas of study, making this minor an excellent complement to your academic major.
Why study French at Gordon?
At Gordon you'll study French through the lens of Christian faith, gaining insight into how language works and how it can help individuals understand creation and experience God. You might also combine your French studies with linguistic courses to deepen your knowledge of language acquisition. For a full-immersion experience, Quebec is but a five-hour drive away. We also partner with study-abroad programs in France, Belgium and Senegal.
What can Christians bring to the study of the French language?
Christians who speak French fluently can bring the good news of the Gospel to Francophone nations and cultures. Fluency in multiple languages facilitates opportunities to share the Gospel with more people and provide support, comfort and friendship through the connection of a shared language.
