Music Visit Opportunities

Want to learn more about music at Gordon?

The Gordon College Department of Music is thrilled to invite High School musicians (grades 9 to 12) to participate in:

Join us for these fun and transformational learning experiences at Gordon’s Department of Music. Held on Gordon’s beautiful campus, these are fantastic musical opportunities for all high school musicians to perform with Gordon's music ensembles, learn from our faculty, observe our rehearsal process, and meet our wonderful students. Whether you want to pursue a music major in college, or just want to discover ways to continue making music during your college career, this is your chance to jump in and experience it all first-hand! 

You may choose to participate in any of the days that fit your musical interests. You may also choose whether you wish to rehearse and perform with the ensemble(s), or sit-in and observe! Most important is that we look forward to welcoming you into our community for an immersive musical experience.

Sunday, October 9: Meet the Band

Included on this day are:

  • An in-depth tour of the Phillips Music Center
  • Receive information about our music programs
  • Learn from Gordon’s inspiring conductor, Dr. Gabe Southard and applied lesson instructors by playing in a rehearsal with the Symphonic Band
  • Meet music students at your complimentary dinner at the College’s spectacular dining facility. 
  • Perform in the Symphonic Band concert that evening

If you are a woodwind, brass or percussion player, you can rehearse and perform with the Gordon Symphonic Band for a night! Repertoire includes Irish Tune from County Derry by Percy Grainger and Golden Light by David Maslanka. 

Please register by September 23 if you wish to perform in the band on October 9th.

After your registration, Dr. Southard will personally reach out to you and provide you with music and practice resources to prepare for the concert. 

To get the full College experience, we recommend that you book your overnight stay with a Gordon music student and also register to attend Explore Gordon.

Registration Deadline to play in the Symphonic Band Concert (woodwind, brass and percussion): All registrations must be received by Friday, September 23

Registration Deadline to join us for these events without playing in the Band Concert: All registrations must be received by Thursday, October 7


Monday, October 10: Explore Gordon and Fine Arts Track

Experience Gordon for yourself and discover firsthand what adventures await you here.

If you’re just dipping your toes into the college search process, Explore Gordon will introduce you to our programs and our community. 

This exclusive experience will allow you to hear first-hand from current students, take a guided tour around our beautiful grounds and receive the best tips and tricks for applying to Gordon. 

In particular, the Fine Arts Track will allow you to explore our offerings in the performing and fine arts and experience music classes and rehearsals.

Come explore all there is to know and love about life here on the north shore of Boston and don’t miss this great opportunity to learn more about Music at Gordon!

Saturday, October 29: Into the "New World" with Gordon Symphony Orchestra

If you are a high school string player (violin, viola, cello, double bass), this is an exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform the last movement of Dvorak’s beloved New World Symphony with the Gordon Symphony Orchestra. We invite you to come, observe and learn alongside our orchestra. Experience the life of a Gordon College music student and be inspired! 

Included on this day are:

  • An in-depth tour of the Philips Music Center
  • Receive information about our music programs
  • Learn from Gordon's inspiring conductor, Dr. Gabe Southard by observing or playing in a rehearsal with the Symphony Orchestra
  • Meet music students at our complimentary dinner at the College's spectacular dining facility 
  • Observe or perform in the Symphony Orchestra concert that event 

If you are a violin, viola, cello or bass player, and would like to rehearse and perform with the Gordon Symphony Orchestra for a night please register by October 14.

Sunday, October 30: Meet the Gordon Choirs

If you are a singer, this is an exciting opportunity to rehearse and perform with the Gordon College choirs in our intergenerational Community of Song concert. We invite you to come, observe and learn alongside our all the Gordon College choirs in a performance of “Baba Yetu” by Christopher Tin. This will be a musical experience you won’t want to miss!

Included on this day are:

  • Learn from our inspiring Choir conductors Dr. Minji Kim and Dr. YaLin Huang by observing or singing in the rehearsal with the Choirs
  • Observe or perform in the Community of OSng concert that afternoon
  • Personally meet and chat with our choir conductors after the concert with some refreshments
  • Meet music students and learn more about our music programs
  • Join the in-depth tour of Philips Music Center

If you are a singer, and would like to rehearse and perform with the Gordon Choirs for a night please register by October 19.

After your registration, Dr. Minji Kim and Dr. YaLin Huang will personally reach out to you and provide you with music and practice resources to prepare for the concert.
