Overview
The preservation and maintenance of history is just as valuable as exploring history itself. If you love museums and their exhibits and see importance in learning how to manage and steward them well, Gordon College's public history and museum studies minor is for you.
By combining history studies with the practical aspects of museum business administration and management, you’ll learn to master the curation and presentation of history at museums and historic sites. With a promising college-to-career bridge in a growing field, you can use your passions to bring the world of academic inquiry and discovery to the public.
Why study public history and museum studies at Gordon?
Gordon’s location in New England is close to rich historical sites and world-class cultural institutions, from the Salem Maritime National Historic Site to the Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Public Library and beyond. Located where the Great Awakening, the American Revolution and other key historical events took place, you’ll get to explore these moments in time through classes and field trips.
You’ll receive personalized mentoring from our experienced faculty; explore exciting research topics; and pursue internships at local museums, historical sites or even the State House. Through our partner institution, Pimoth-Patuxet Museums, you could even spend a summer interning in Plymouth, MA.
What can Christians bring to public history and museum studies?
Museums are a critical part of preserving the past so the public can see and learn from it. A Christian worldview gives us a clearer understanding of who human beings are: created in the image of God, ensnared by sin yet open to Christ’s redemption. Christian historians can explore the history of peoples from around the world to better understand and love our neighbors today. By learning what happened in the past and showcasing it in a way people can access and understand, we encourage truth, hope and reconciliation.
