Latin American Studies

Overview

Are you drawn by the vibrant sounds, colors, music, food and sights of Latin America?

Gordon College's Latin American studies minor will take you on an eye-opening exploration of the religion, politics, economics and cultures of Latin America. By gaining an in-depth understanding of a major geopolitical region and its language, you’ll be prepared to engage with these cultures in a variety of professions. You’ll also have the chance to choose a specific culture to encounter through a required field experience in a Latin American country.

Why study Latin American studies at Gordon?

As Christians we are called to love and understand our neighbors, even those with languages and cultures that differ from our own. Gordon’s location in the multicultural Greater Boston area offers opportunities for involvement in local Spanish-speaking communities and church congregations.

You’ll also have the opportunity to develop deep global exposure through our required in-field experience. From studying abroad in Costa Rica to a service-based trip to Mexico or the Dominican Republic, you’ll get the chance to practice Spanish firsthand and engage with the people and cultures you’re seeking to understand.

What can Christians bring to Latin American studies?

Leadership Ministries Worldwide reports that more than 90 percent of people in Latin America are Christians, and many don’t have access to Spanish biblical resources. Many Latin American nations also struggle with poor infrastructure and other challenges. Christians can celebrate and honor the broad experiences and expressions of humanity that arise out of diverse cultural, historical and ethnic communities as evidence of God’s Kingdom.
