Digital Literacy Computer Science Education

Overview

Gordon's programs in Digital Literacy Computer Science Education equip students to become certified DLCS teachers, preparing them to cultivate a curiosity for technology in grades PreK–6 or 5–12. Aligned with the new DESE license, DLCS students gain skills to develop engaging curriculum, foster critical thinking and prepare students for success in a tech-driven world.

There are two DLCS programs offered, a Master of Education and a certificate.

M.Ed. in Digital Literacy Computer Science Education

This program offers two licensure pathways, PreK–6 and 5–12, designed to equip educators with the skills to integrate authentic digital literacy, coding, and computer science into their instruction.

  • The PreK–6 pathway is ideal for elementary teachers seeking to enhance their classroom practice with meaningful digital literacy experiences, while also introducing foundational coding and computational thinking.
  • The 5–12 pathway prepares educators to teach both digital literacy content and the computer science knowledge and skills required at the secondary level, ensuring students are ready for advanced digital learning and future careers in technology.

Additionally, some individuals may pursue this program to become a school-based DLCS teacher and serve as a dedicated resource for integrating digital literacy and computer science across grade levels and supporting broader school initiatives in technology education.

Certificate in Digital Literacy Computer Science Education

The Graduate Certificate in Digital Literacy and Computer Science equips educators with the essential competencies needed to teach digital literacy and computing skills across grade levels. Designed for teachers seeking PreK–6 or 5-12 DLCS competency fulfillment or preparation for the DLCS MTEL, this three‑course certificate provides a practical, hands‑on pathway to build confidence in programming, software systems, digital citizenship, and technology‑rich instructional design.

Through coursework aligned with Massachusetts DLCS standards, educators explore coding and algorithmic thinking, examine ethical and responsible technology use, gain foundational knowledge of software systems and networks, and learn to design engaging, equitable, and developmentally appropriate computing experiences for all learners. Courses may be taken in any order and are offered on a rotating schedule.

This stackable certificate allows educators to immediately apply their learning in PreK–12 settings and may be applied toward the Master of Education in Digital Literacy and Computer Science with initial licensure in PreK-6 or 5-12, or for those wishing to continue their graduate study.
