Academic Support Center

The Academic Support Center addresses individual student needs and learning styles and strives to recognize and develop the gifts of each student. The Center's programs include:

The Writing Center
Trained writing tutors are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis for feedback on all aspects of writing, including finding ideas, revising, and documentation of sources. Tutors also work with non-native speakers in improving language skills. The Writing Center is open Sunday evenings and Monday through Thursday afternoons and evenings. Writing tutor schedules and sign-up sheets for appointments are posted in the Center.

Subject Tutoring

  • Small Group Support: Small groups are offered for large core classes, such as Arts in Concert, Chemistry, Old Testament, New Testament, Western Civilization and World Civilization. Groups are set up at the beginning of each semester and meet at least once a week with a peer tutor.
  • One-on-One Subject Tutoring: Math, foreign language and other subject tutors are available at designated weekly times that are posted in the Academic Support Center.

Assistance with Study Skills & Time Management

  • One-on-One Help With General Academic Problems: Professional staff are available on a walk-in or appointment basis for help with time management, study skills, special advising, issues related to learning disabilities and English as a Second Language (ESL), and general troubleshooting.
  • College Study Skills course (ND 099): This is a quad-long course, open to any student, emphasizing college reading skills, test taking, note taking, time management and study habits. This course does require a fee. Call the Center at 978.867.4746 (x4746 on campus) for information.

Disabilities Information and Assistance with Academic Accommodations
The Academic Support Center works with students with learning disabilities, ADHD, and medical/psychological issues that affect academic access; ASC staff will help students communicate with faculty and arrange for appropriate accommodations as specified in the students' documentation. Such accommodations could include:

  • Recorded books
  • Extended time for tests
  • Quiet testing areas
  • Taping of lectures
  • Copies of notes
  • Special advising
  • Other accommodations as supported in documentation and as appropriate

Physical Disabilities
Services for students with mobility disabilities or other disabilities that require accommodations related to physical access should contact Terry Charek, Center for Student Development, ext. 4072.

Eligibility
Students who intend to request academic accommodations based on a disability must submit written documentation from a specialist to the Academic Support Center and to the Registrar. Documentation must:

  • Be no more than three years old
  • Provide clear evidence of a disability
  • Specify the appropriate academic accommodations

Resources for Faculty
The Academic Support Center assists faculty by providing verification of disability, by providing services such as notes and test accommodations, and by communicating current requirements related to appropriate services. Gordon faculty should include a disabilities statement in their syllabus each semester. Faculty should contact Ann Seavey, ext. 4746, should any concerns or questions arise.
