Bio
Ryan Cowden majored in philosophy and earned a Master of Arts in Education from Azusa Pacific University. He spent seven years teaching social studies in Los Angeles County public schools. Ryan then earned a PhD in curriculum and instruction from Indiana University.
During his time at Indiana University, he also taught a variety of elementary and secondary education courses in the School of Education. Ryan’s research interests include social studies education, teacher leadership, and education policy. In a recent article, Ryan analyzed the contents of anti-critical race theory laws and their implications for teacher agency. Ryan’s dissertation focused on the leadership decisions made by social studies department chairs surrounding the 2024 presidential election. As a classroom teacher, Ryan’s pedagogy prioritizes dialogue, engagement with multiple perspectives, and inquiry-based lesson design to develop thoughtful and reflective educators. As both a teacher educator and scholar, Ryan aims to develop teacher leaders who are committed to grappling with the complexities of teaching in a pluralistic, democratic society and influencing positive change in schools and classrooms on behalf of their students. As a product of Christian education with public school teaching experience, Ryan is excited to help his students explore the intersection of faith and teaching, and the particular role for Christian educators in the important work of education.
