Bio
Dr. Joanna Hersey is a performing artist and educator with twenty years’ experience as a leader in higher education. An advocate for military-affiliated students, she is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard, where she managed educational programming and outreach. Dr. Hersey came to Gordon from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, having served as Professor of Music and Associate Dean of Student Success, directing the Interdisciplinary Studies and Health Careers Access Programs, engaging learners across their lifetimes in support of community health and wellbeing.
Focusing her research on career mobility, access, and inclusion in music, Dr. Hersey has published numerous articles and book chapters, and can be heard on more than a dozen albums. She is a recipient of the International Tuba Euphonium Association's Mary Ann Craig Focus on Women Award, established to honor work which centers the achievements and creativity of women. She has served on the faculty at East Carolina University, Eastern Connecticut State University, and the University of Hartford's Hartt School of Music, Dance and Theatre, where her work enriched summer coursework for adult learners.
Active in nonprofit leadership, Dr. Hersey serves on the Board of Directors for the Service Women's Action Network, providing counseling and resources for military women and families, as Conference Chair for the International Alliance for Women in Music, and as Treasurer of the International Tuba Euphonium Association.
Dr. Hersey directs the Gordon College Anchor Initiative, housed in the Center for Teaching and Learning, providing resources and support for student growth and achievement. She continues to serve as Flotilla Staff Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, responsible for oversight and coordination of the Flotilla Vessel Safety Check Program.
