SPECIAL CHAPEL: "How Long, O Lord?" – An Interactive Musical Exploration of Psalm 13
Friday, November 19, 2021
7pm | Phillips Music Center
This unique concert & discussion event is presented by the Gordon College Department of Music and Chapel Office. The event uses music to explore the richness, beauty, and mystery of the psalms in a unique and powerful way. Participants will listen to live performances of several new musical interpretations of Psalm 13, written by a diverse collection of Christian composers, including Gordon faculty member Dr. Mary Montgomery-Koppel, and Director of Worship Bil Mooney-McCoy. Then, through discussion led by Prof. Delvyn Case from Wheaton College, MA, they will consider how the different musical settings help us experience, understand, and appreciate the depth and subtlety of this powerful psalm of lament and deliverance.
This event was developed by Deus Ex Musica, an ecumenical organization that promotes sacred music as a resource for learning and spiritual growth. Versions of this unique event have been hosted by a variety of churches, seminaries, and organizations throughout the world, including the Anglican parish of St Martin in the Fields (London), Trinity Western University (Canada), Boston College School of Theology, and the national conference of the United Church of Christ.
This evening’s performers are Carrie Cheron from the Grammy-nominated Skylark Vocal Ensemble and pianist Julia Scott Carey.

It's 1954. Young Benjy Stone is realizing his lifelong dream of writing for television, working as a freshman writer on TV's most popular comedy show: King Kaiser's Comedy Cavalade. Just when he thought it couldn't get any more exciting, Benjy is assigned to "chaperone" the swashbuckling veteran Hollywood star, Alan Swann, Benjy's movie idol and inspiration since he was a child. It's a dream come true, until he meets the real Swann and realizes that life is much more complicated than it ever looks in the movies. Ahrens and Flaherty's coming-of-age musical is based on the 1982 motion picture, My Favorite Year.
