Rebecca Tober’s La Vida Experience

La Vida participant in 2009

Supervising Producer at 1623 Studios
Beverly, MA

The first person to share their life story was probably really scared.

Entering into a space with strangers in an unfamiliar setting can be intimidating. I quickly realized though, when it came time for me to share, that La Vida facilitates a safe space for everyone to share their own story. I began to realize that each person entering into the experience is different and, through their story, you learn so much about how they function and what they value on and off the trail.

Creating that welcoming environment even when there are certain elements out of your control, such as weather, has influenced the way in which I go about my job as a producer for 1623 Studios. In interviews, I have to facilitate a space where it doesn’t feel like it is on camera so that the interviewee feels comfortable. I have to develop leading questions and direct the conversation to ensure that we stay on subject.

On La Vida, the gratitude and safety of everyone sharing were really nice, and I have worked hard to facilitate those types of experiences every day in my job.
