OCE Director Named 2013 SCI Social Capitalist

Recently, Office of Community Engagement Director Val Buchanan was named one of six Community Social Capitalists at a luncheon in Boston hosted by Social Capital Inc. (SCI). SCI defines a social capitalist as “a volunteer who impacts the lives of others by leveraging their personal and professional network to make a difference,” a definition that those who work with Val recognize fits her perfectly.

The cohort of six honorees marked SCI’s 6th annual award ceremony and also included Daniel Gelbtuch, David Cawley, Mark Culliton, Saritin Rizzuto, and Massachusetts state legislator Rep. James Dwyer. The ceremony and luncheon were attended by 360 guests and emceed by NECN Anchor Latoyia Edwards.

Val was nominated by Stop and Compare Supermarkets and F.U.E.L (Families United in Educational Leadership), both of Lynn, for her work in connecting Gordon College and the Lynn community. Val is also a networker within Lynn, having served in a leadership position with many Lynn community groups including the Community Minority Cultural Center, La Vida Scholars Selection Committee, Harrington School Improvement Committee, Project YES Advisory Board, Lynn Literacy Task Force, the Communities that Care Coalition, Lynn Arts Board and Family and Children’s Service of Lynn Board.

The Office of Community Engagement congratulates Val for this well-deserved honor.
