WENHAM, MA-Gordon College announced today that it has been awarded a $150,000 grant from The Lloyd G. Balfour Foundation, Bank of America, Trustee, for Gordon''s New City Scholars Program. The program provides full tuition assistance to qualified students and an intentionally-comprehensive support system to help urban students transition into postsecondary education.

The New City Scholars Program is designed to assist and retain academically capable students from urban communities within the Boston area through specialized support programs, academic skill preparation and peer mentoring, urban community service and engagement, and leadership building.

"Our New City Scholars are a particularly important part of the Gordon community and mission," said R. Judson Carlberg, Ph.D., president of Gordon. "We committed to improving diversity on our campus not only of race but also of socioeconomic background and this program has been central to that effort."

Next spring the College will graduate the very first New City Scholars and has 35 students currently enrolled in this program. Since its inception, only two students have withdrawn from the program.
