WENHAM, MA-The 2008 online edition of "America's Best Colleges" by U.S. News & World Report has nationally recognized Gordon College for its Service Learning programs. This is the first time the College has been recognized for service learning by U.S. News & World Report. The recognition can be found online within the "Academic Programs--Programs to Look For" section.
"We're humbled and flattered to receive recognition for our service learning programs," says Barry Loy, dean of students at Gordon College. "Service learning is certainly an important aspect of a Gordon education. It's made available to students through programs like Gordon in Lynn, our Chapel program which offers not only service learning, but cross-cultural immersion opportunities and it's also a significant part of our core curriculum. We consider service learning to be a wonderful aspect of a liberal arts education and we hope to continue weaving it into our academic offerings at the College."
This is the sixth consecutive year that U.S. News & World Report has published a list of schools with outstanding examples of academic programs that are believed to lead to student success. Based on feedback from education experts, including staff members of the Association of American Colleges and Universities, U.S. News & World Report identified those programs as the following eight: first-year experiences, internships/co-ops, senior capstone, undergraduate research/creative projects, learning communities, study abroad, service learning and writing in the disciplines.
To be recognized under the service learning category, volunteering in the community must be an instructional strategy at the College-and a requirement of a student's coursework. The service relates to what happens in class and vice versa. College presidents, chief academic officers, deans of students, and deans of admissions from over 1,300 schools, nominated up to 10 institutions with stellar examples of each program type. Colleges and universities that were mentioned most often were included on the list.
