Space Heater Policy

Portable Space Heaters

Portable Space Heaters are not permitted in dormitories but may be used in academic and administrative buildings on campus during the winter months (December–April) if needed.

Eligibility for use is determined by the following:

  1. The area struggles to maintain 68 degrees.
  2. There is not already a space heater running on the same circuit.

If you believe that your work area meets these requirements, then please submit a work order. Physical Plant will review your request, check stock availability and assess the area. Only Space Heaters owned and maintained by the Gordon College Physical Plant may be used on campus. You may not bring your own personal space heater to campus.

Please note: If you have a medical condition that necessitates the use of a space heater, then please make note of that in your work order as you may be exempt from some of the requirements.

Rules for operating an approved space heater:

  1. The unit must be placed on the floor. It should never be operating while on top of furniture.
  2. The unit must be at least three feet away from furniture and combustible materials wherever the unit is plugged in.
  3. You may not use an extension cord with the unit unless set-up by Physical Plant with an appropriate cord. It will be labeled for safety.
  4. The heat must be turned off when you are not in close proximity.
  5. If you believe there is a problem with a space heater provided by Physical Plant, please unplug the equipment and call physical plant (978-867-4302) immediately (or after hours, Gordon Police: 978-867-4444). Do not plug the unit in again until Physical Plant has inspected it and cleared it for use.

Thank you for your cooperation!
