WENHAM, MA-R. Judson Carlberg, president of Gordon College and chair of the Board of the Christian College Consortium, announced today that Dr. Stan D. Gaede, scholar-in-residence at Gordon College, was elected president of the Christian College Consortium (CCC).

Gaede started his career at Gordon College as a distinguished professor of sociology, and later became dean of students and provost. He served as provost and then president of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, California--also a member of the Consortium. In 2006, after serving at Westmont College for a decade, Gaede returned to Gordon as scholar-in-residence and special advisor to the president.

"I am certain that no one is better qualified than Dr. Gaede to help Consortium members focus our discussions and communicate our concerns, not only within Christian higher education but to a wider public, including the news media and our elected officials in Washington, D.C." says R. Judson Carlberg. "Dr. Gaede's very broad experience in Christian higher education, his thoughtfulness as scholar and writer, and his ability to communicate clearly and graciously to diverse audiences are all qualities that bode well for his success in his new role as president of the Christian College Consortium."

Gaede's election is a half-time appointment, allowing him to continue as Gordon's scholar-in-residence on a half-time basis. This arrangement will be made feasible by the relocation of the Consortium Office from New Hampshire to Gordon's Wenham campus this summer.

"I am deeply honored by this appointment and the dual opportunities of CCC president and scholar-in-residence at Gordon College. The Consortium is comprised of some of the leading Christian colleges and universities in North America; institutions that have helped reinvigorate the meaning and significance of the liberal arts in their historical and Christian context," says Gaede. "Together they have enabled their students to engage one another on the central issues of our time, expanding the scope of their educational offerings in the process and sending their graduates into leadership positions around the world. Facilitating that mission, both individually and collectively, is the task at hand. I cannot think of a more important endeavor, either as a scholar or as CCC colleague."

Stan Gaede is also known for his many books and scholarly articles. His two most recent books are An Incomplete Guide to the Rest of Your Life (2002) and When Tolerance Is No Virtue (1995). He received his B.A. in Sociology and History from Westmont College, an M.A. in Sociology from California State University, Northridge, and his Ph.D from Vanderbilt University.

Tom Englund, who is retiring after 17 years of service as President of the CCC, is excited about Gaede's vision for the Consortium. "Given Stan's vast experience in Christian higher education, I know he will provide excellent leadership for the Consortium. Englund, who also served as Dean of Student at Gordon College from 1967-1976, will continue to support the CCC through June 30, 2008 during the leadership change-over. "Stan has experience as a faculty member, an academic dean, a college provost and a college president. He has the experience for this job, and I'm looking forward to working with him through this transition."

The Christian College Consortium, made up of 13 colleges and universities, was established over 35 years ago and has earned respect for the quality of its member institutions and its shared vision of integrating Christian faith with the living and learning experiences available at the member schools.  Part of the Consortium's purpose is to discuss the most urgent issues facing the evangelical Christian church, American higher education in general, and Christian higher education in particular.

Information on the Christian College Consortium is available online at www.ccconsortium.org. To schedule an interview with Dr. Stan Gaede, or for details on his new appointment, contact Cyndi McMahon at or call 978.867.4236.
