WENHAM, MA—Twenty films. Thirty filmmakers. One night at Cinema Salem. While most students are spending time outside during spring months, Gordon College film students have been in the editing studio preparing for their first off-campus screening in downtown Salem.
The Gordon Film Society in association with the Communication Arts Department will present the Gordon College Student Film Showcase at Cinema Salem (1 East India Square) on Thursday, May 12, at 9:00 p.m. Twenty short films written, produced, directed and shot entirely by students at Gordon College, and including actors from across the North Shore, will comprise the two-hour event, which includes an intermission. The Gordon College Film Showcase is free and open to the public.
Students enrolled in three different courses—Introduction to Production, Intermediate Video Production and Media, Ethics and Culture Senior Seminar—created the films, which run three to 10 minutes each. Genres range from comedies and dramas to music videos. One is a period piece set in Nazi Germany and done all in German with English subtitles. Another is a dark comedy about a clown who has his hands replaced by hooks and has to find a new profession.
“Since coming to Gordon last year, I have been excited to see students in the Communication Arts Department grow in their work,” said Toddy Burton, assistant professor of communication arts, and faculty adviser for the showcase. “This event at Cinema Salem is a wonderful opportunity to share the students’ creative film work with the extended community.”
Students even coordinated the showcase at Cinema Salem. From creating posters and coordinating publicity to making trailers for the films being featured, a team of six students took on the event planning. Many of the students who planned the screening or are featuring their work are graduating May 21 and hope filmmaking and community events such as these are a regular part of their futures.
