Phase One: Institutional Level Data on Percentage Women in Leadership (Paid positions and Board)

The following interactive table includes data from all organizations included in our study with available 2010 990 data. This includes members of the Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA), members of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities (CCCU), the Accord Network (relief and development organizations), and national intermediaries/partners of the Christian Community Development Association (CCDA). 1,481 organizations are included.

From these organizations, information is available on 3,300 top-compensated leaders of the organizations, and 15,851 board members.

This table illustrates the ways that organization type, region, and budget size are correlated with the percentage of women holding paid leadership positions as well as the percentage of women holding board positions. You are also able to look at how race/ethnicity interacts with gender (noting that only about half of the people in our sample have been coded on race/ethnicity at this point).

Here are a few key findings based on this data analysis:

  • Within these 1,481 organizations, women hold 21% of the board positions, 19% of the top-compensated leadership positions, and 16% of the CEO (or equivalent) positions.
  • Across sectors, women make up a small percentage of CEO positions (or equivalent). This translates into 6% of college presidents, 11% of CEOs of development organizations, 0% of top leaders of student ministries, 8% of CEOs among other large nonprofits, and 22% of top leaders within other smaller nonprofits (those with budgets under $10 million).
  • There is less variation in board averages across sector. Women hold 20% of board seats in colleges, 26% of board seats in development organizations, 20% in student ministries, 19% within other large non-profits, and 22% within smaller nonprofits.
  • Comparatively, women are faring about half as well (sometimes worse) than they are in the larger non-profit sector. The following charts compare data from our study with data from the Benchmarking Women’s Leadership in the United States (Colorado Women’s College, 2013) on the non-profit and educational sectors more generally
