Our conference theme is, "What's Your Story?" It symbolizes the power of story in the work that we do in Christian education. More specifically, it speaks to how God has worked in our lives personally and professionally, as well as corporately through our institutions. Our hope for the conference is for people to leave encouraged as they are reminded that we are called to a higher purpose and standard in our work. We come from various experiences and all possess unique stories, yet we are standing on common ground and on that ground we are called to be people of truth.

"Sitting in the office, reading files, conducting appointments, processing applications--many long hours, and all this after a demanding season of fall travel--deadlines looming, future events to plan for, and more travel coming up… the ordinary person would view this as madness. Why would anyone want to do this? When I applied to be an admissions counselor, I had one primary motive that spurred me on through the whole application process. I had a drive to see students achieve their dreams of attaining higher education. The fact that I personally gained this gift in a richly blessed school with accountability and character formation in the Christian faith burned in me a deep desire to see other students gain the same high quality education, which came with a bonus--character formation. This perspective has largely been influenced by life in Kenya, where I saw thousands of high school students give up their dreams for college because they didn't have access. I first came to the U.S. for college at the age of nineteen, with the hopes of somehow getting an education in college. I couldn't have done it without the help of my admissions counselors. And now the charge to 'pay it forward' is not just a commitment that I have dedicated a season in my life to, but a joy to accomplish in the lives of even a few students."

"I once spoke with a high school teacher who was interested in bringing her entire ASL class (about 30 students) to our Deaf Studies Visit Day. She knew that her students would be exposed to a chapel service as part of the visit experience and she cried on the phone as she spoke about the wonderful opportunity this would be to bring a group of unchurched students to our event. She and I prayed together on the phone that the students would sense something different about the community on our campus. We have continued our relationship and her hope has been to bring unchurched students to visit our campus annually."

I love realizing that the students we come in contact with have the potential to change the world. They might not be a Billy Graham or a Bono or a Mother Teresa, but they will certainly have a profound impact in the world whether they are preachers, businessmen/women, teachers, youth ministers, missionaries, etc. This is my 4th year at LCC and I hope that the highlights of my career are someday in the future when I hear about lives changed because of students I helped recruit."

"It has been 14 years since I felt like God was calling me into full time work for him. I knew I wasn't called to preach or anything like that so I told God that if he would open a chance for me, I would gladly do whatever for him. The opportunity opened for me in Admissions and I have happily been involved in Christian higher education ever since. Admissions totally is my calling and I enjoy every aspect of it! It is amazing how God will allow you to utilize your talents and abilities if you turn them over to HIM! It is great to know that you are doing exactly want the Lord has equipped you to do."

"I am a bridge builder--I have worked at Kuyper College for six years and it has been awesome to educate staff and students about diversity and how to embrace our cultural differences for Christ."

"I really enjoy reading applications; it's a glimpse into the lives of some amazing young people. The stories they write are much more personal than they'd normally share face-to-face with a stranger. I find myself sometimes shocked at some of the trials that they've already encountered, but they have resolved to pick themselves up and continue fighting for the call that God has given them. It's ignorant to think that the students we recruit come from perfect homes and perfect churches. Many of the students I have worked with have experienced a lot of pain, but God has shown them to turn it around for His glory."

"I am a product of Christian higher education and I know how important it was in shaping who I am."

"I had an applicant who came from a rough past, but found financial "success" in life. However, she was willing to sell everything, literally, to receive a biblical education at PBU. Her faith and values challenge and inspire me to this day, even though she since has graduated. She helped me recognize the significance of a biblical foundation."

"I recently attended the wedding of two students that I recruited. I watched them grow up and become godly people and professionals."

"A friend asked if I was considering graduate school and helped me find a program. It was the first time I had thought that I could have a career, not just a job, in higher education. NACCAP has since provided me with friends, exposure to other Christian colleges, and the sense of a shared mission."

"I loved my experience at Bethel and want to share that with new prospective students. It also ties in very well with my work as a youth pastor for eight years!"
Mindy Molin

"I had a young lady that I recruited come into my office and begin telling me that the doctors gave her mother, who had cancer, just a few more months to live. As I listened, she cried and told me stories about her mother. We prayed together and I realized that this is what my job is all about, being there for students when they need you most."

"I once wrestled in a sumo suit with a youth worker at a church event in Portland, OR. I love hanging with high schoolers and building relationships that are authentic!"

"At one point, I realized that I wasn't just working for a college, but working with a group of people who love and worship the same God and who love the students with whom they interact. The AU community believes not only in the institution itself, but in the history of it and the people who have walked its halls. There is no other place I'd rather be. The AU community is my home."
