Marine Biology Institute

THE MARINE BIOLOGY INSTITUTE (MBI)
Experience marine systems of New England firsthand! This intensive, four credit course combines lecture, lab and field work to introduce you to the marine organisms in our area. The course is offered as part of Gordon's May Term and is offered on even-numbered years (next: 2014).

OBJECTIVES
The course is designed to partially fulfill requirements for the Marine Biology concentration within the Biology major, but all students with interest and appropriate backgrounds are welcome to join us this summer.

The MBI

  • Provides valuable experience in the zoology, botany and ecology of marine organisms from the Gulf of Maine
  • Develops skill in identifying the plants and animals of New England marine systems
  • Fosters ability in the illustration of biological organisms
  • You will get to develop and complete your own research project
  • Nurtures a greater appreciation for the wonders of God's creation

GET YOUR HANDS WET
In addition to lectures by guest faculty, you will have the opportunity to visit many marine systems right here on the North Shore and in surrounding New England. You will take part in research and the collection of data from a variety of marine environments, including:

  • Bass Rocks - Gloucester, MA
  • Essex estuary - Essex, MA
  • Local laboratories such as
    • Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute
    • Marine Biological Laboratory
  • Salem Harbor - Salem, MA
  • Wingaersheek Beach - Gloucester, MA
