THE CASE FOR THE HEART OF DISCOVERY CAMPAIGN
Gordon College is in a unique position to address the most salient issues in science today. We provide rigorous training in the sciences within a broad liberal arts context, infused with the compassion and vision that come from one's faith. This enables students to respond with clarity and a sense of calling to the challenges of our time, such as the AIDS pandemic, hunger relief and sustainable agriculture.
We believe that it is vital to prepare students with strong moral and theological bearings, who will be involved in scientific research and decisions that impact the hope and well-being of the world in years to come.
Faculty and students are already engaged in study and research on leading issues such as world hunger and sustainable agriculture, ecology and stewardship of natural resources and medical cures for causes of human suffering. They are providing important perspective on the difficult moral and ethical dilemmas confronting modern society.
OUTSTANDING PEOPLE NEED FIRST-RATE FACILITIES
However, even as the College has experienced dramatic growth in overall enrollment of over 25 percent in recent years, the number of science majors has remained constant. Feedback from prospective science students has confirmed that the inadequate facilities for science majors is the primary hindrance to their attending Gordon. This inadequacy must be addressed before the situation can be turned around.
To prepare students for tomorrow's vocations in science and technology it is imperative that Gordon build the facilities needed for a top-tier scientific undergraduate education. Such an investment ensures that these students will receive training that prepares them for acceptance into the best graduate programs in the country and a lifetime of effective work in the sciences.
THE KEN OLSEN SCIENCE CENTER
The Ken Olsen Science Center is the College's most ambitious building endeavor to date: a science and technology center to be built in two phases at the heart of our campus. Phase I will address the most critical areas of biology and chemistry, while Phase II will provide new space for mathematics, movement science, botany, computer science, physics & psychology.
