The Root Cellar is an organization based in the heart of Portland, Maine with a Kingdom focus on God, His mission in the world, and His purpose and commissioning for us as followers of Christ. Its mission statement states that it seeks to fulfill the goal of “uniting the local community in the common cause of satisfying the physical and spiritual needs of inner-city youth and their families” (therootcellar.org).
Among those they try to reach is the immigrant Somali population that has reshaped and redefined the demographic of the city. Portland, Maine is home to the second largest concentration of Somali refugees in the United States and the Root Cellar has championed the task of serving these people. They do this by meeting tangible needs such as providing an after-school tutoring program for children, a job placement center for adults, free medical and dental care in an office run by volunteers, and a food pantry and clothing distribution center.
While we are in Portland our team will get the chance to serve in, or observe all of these ministries. This trip is great for youth ministry or education majors who love working with kids, social work majors who want to learn more about this unique and diverse city, or anyone who wants to grow, serve, and learn from this great organization and meet some people that will shift your worldview. And it's only about an hour away from Gordon’s campus!
