Kinesiology

The Kinesiology major provides students a focused study on human movement and its relationship to physical activity, health and disease. Our program explores how muscular forces cause changes in a body segment’s position, how the heart and lungs work to delivery oxygen to power movement, how the brain and spinal cord cooperate to sense and produce motion, and much more! Many students continue to top-rated graduate programs in the health professions.

Distinctives

Preparation for Health Professions: A distinctive of our program is its clinical emphasis. Study of clinical content and applications are provided through selected courses, laboratory experiences, service-learning projects and internships. The Center for Balance, Mobility and Wellness with its specialized outpatient physical therapy practice and membership-based fitness program provides unique on-campus learning experiences for students.

Hands-On Learning: Laboratory experiences are key components of the Anatomy & Physiology, Exercise Physiology, and Biomechanics courses. Students gain proficiency in animal dissection, determining oxygen consumption and caloric expenditure, measuring body composition, testing muscular strength and power, EKG treadmill testing, and Vicon Nexus motion capture.

Research Opportunities: Students are encouraged to participate in ongoing faculty research projects. Current opportunities include analysis of minimalist and midfoot-strike shoes on running kinematics, assessment of rehabilitation methods for focal task specific dystonia, and evidenced-based evaluation of fall prevention programs.
