Swaziland
The village of Bulembu is located in the heart of the mountains of Swaziland, just a few minutes ride from the South African Border. A once-flourishing mining town, Bulembu was the economic center of Swaziland. However by the late 90’s the mine had been shut down, leaving the residents of the Bulembu with no work, and no future. Just as the mine was shutting, leaving residents jobless and hopeless, AIDS was ravaging the young adult population of Swaziland, leaving in its wake pain, sorrow, and a generation of orphans. In 2006 a team of entrepreneurs and social developers purchased the, by then, abandoned Bulembu with the goal of building a self-sustaining community that would provide orphan care to hundred of children, leadership development, and job opportunities, all within a Christian framework.
Over the past few years Gordon students have had the opportunity to commit themselves to serving this community of believers with our labor and our time. We have helped in their medical clinic, cut grass, painted cafeterias, built playgrounds, played soccer and, most importantly, learned a great deal from our Swazi brothers and sisters.
Our trip this summer will consist of spending time with the kids and their “Aunties” and filling whatever needs we can in regards to manual labor. This trip provides students with an incredible opportunity to serve, but more importantly it provides an opportunity to learn and come to a fuller understanding of what the Global Body of Christ truly is. For people who have a heart for kids and are seeking an opportunity to learn, serve, and walk deeper with our Lord, this is the trip to do that!
