THE DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Chemistry Department provides you with the opportunity to learn about what the science community refers to as "the central science." As Christian scholars, we encourage you to gain an understanding of the field of chemistry and its relationship to society and societal issues in the context of a Christian worldview. Our department is an initial signatory to the Green Chemistry Commitment.
COURSE OF STUDY
The program covers the major branches of chemistry—organic, analytical, physical, and inorganic—and gives you the opportunity to concentrate on preparing for a professional career in chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, or high-school teaching through a number of concentrations within the major. In addition, you may pursue a minor or second major in another field, such as:
To learn more about the program, our concentrations (Biochemistry, Health Professions, or Professional), and courses, click on the Chemistry Major link.
We are dedicated to providing you with high-caliber instruction in the experimental and theoretical aspects of chemistry and that we will equip you for graduate study or employment in the field.
FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
You will have access to a range of chemical instrumentation, including light spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, chromatography, calorimetry, and computers. As part of its commitment to the sciences, Gordon continues to acquire new instruments and tools that enhance the hands-on experience in the laboratory and classroom. We are enjoing the new Ken Olsen Science Center.
Research is central to the scientific endeavor. You will be encouraged to work with us on research projects and to pursue research at the many excellent summer research programs available in New England and across the country. Many of our students travel to local and national technical meetings to present the results of their research. In the past six years, dozens of students have undertaken research projects that have resulted in presentations at regional and national science meetings. Students regularly present their research at venues around the country.
The size of the department allows you to develop friendships with us and your fellow majors, as we work together to study and enjoy chemistry as members of the Christian academic community at Gordon. Departmental activities include:
THE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE
Time to pack your bags and books…You can choose among many semester, year, short-term, or summer abroad programs around the globe through the Global Education Office (GEO). Tuition for the programs is the same as a regular semester or year on campus. Check out some of the many opportunities:
