Combined Languages Minor

Language lies at the heart of every culture—to learn a foreign language is to enter into a new world. In the combined languages minor, you will work to achieve proficiency in two languages, thereby encountering two cultures at a deep level. You will also learn how languages are structured and meaning is communicated. Though mastering a foreign language requires commitment and effort, the rewards are of lifelong value.

Why study combined languages at Gordon?

Gordon’s Languages and Linguistics Department offers advanced-level instruction in Spanish and French. You may also have the opportunity to pursue upper-level coursework in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew overseas or through independent study. We see global exposure as a crucial component of your education, and are committed to making your required two semesters abroad possible—so your financial aid package will apply to any Gordon-approved programs.

What careers can I pursue by studying combined languages?

Your proficiency in multiple languages and your intercultural competency will prepare you for graduate studies and will serve you well in a wide variety of careers, including:

  • Business
  • Education
  • Missions and ministry

Go the extra mile!

Join one or several of Gordon’s language clubs, including the Spanish Club and the Cercle Français. Participate in student-led service-learning trips to locations where your primary languages of study are spoken. Consider undertaking a substantial research project on a topic of interest, which culminates in a written honors thesis and oral presentation in front of departmental faculty. Also, stay on the lookout for cultural events in the Greater Boston area.

Global Opportunities

To ensure that you acquire in-depth linguistic and cultural understanding of your two primary languages, you will complete at least one semester of study abroad in each language.
