TEMPO DI DIO, QUOTIDIANO DELL'UOMO: Iconie Russie
Palazza dei Sette, May 10-25, Conference and Opening Saturday May 10
Russia Cristiana was founded in 1957 by Father Romano Scalfi for the purpose of making known in the West the spiritual, cultural and liturgical riches of the Russian Orthodox tradition, and of contributing to the Christian presence in Russia during a time when the militant atheism of the Soviet regime tightly restricted the liturgical and spiritual life of Orthodox Christianity.
During the post-Soviet period, the Foundation Russia Cristiana (founded in 1992) has expanded to the countries of Eastern Europe and Russia its mission of promoting theological, philosophical, liturgical and artistic work and research. The Foundation collaborates with academic and civic institutions throughout Europe to open up space for cultural activities informed by the traditions of Russian Orthodoxy which until recently have been kept in the shadows.
One of the most important initiatives of Russia Cristiana has been the revitalization of the tradition of icon writing, first through an association of friends formed in 1978 under the leadership of Father Egon Sendler--who first conceived this work while a prisoner in a Soviet concentration camp--then developed into La scuola de Seriate, where over 500 students have received formal iconographic training.
Work from this school has been brought together as the exhibition entitled, Il tempo di Dio, quotidiano dell'uomo, "Eternal time of God; ordinary time of man."
"In Christian culture, the very flow of time--through the rhythms of seasons, of day and night--has always carried deep symbolic meaning. Time itself makes eternally present the Mystery of the story of Salvation, of the Incarnation, Death and Resurrection of Christ through which God has entered our own temporal dimension, making possible for humankind the fullness of being. And yet such salvation is not automatic. Only through adherence to Christ through our own personal liberty amidst ordinary daily life can man be regenerated, rediscovering the divine dimension that continually enriches his existence and testifies to the transfiguration of the cosmos. Tracing the story of salvation, the icons of this show offer a meditation on how various events in the life of Jesus and of the Mother of God make visible the project of God for the redemption of humankind. At the same time, the show provides an historical tour through the various forms and typologies assumed by the Icon in diverse geographic areas and cultural contexts."
