Thomas Phillips retired in 1991 as chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Raytheon Company; he retired as a director in 2000. He was elected chairman in 1975, having served as president since 1964. He was named chief executive officer in 1968.
In 1948 Tom joined Raytheon and moved up the organization. He is a graduate of Boston Public Latin School and earned B.S.E. and M.S.E.E. degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
He has been awarded honorary degrees by Babson College, Boston College, Gordon College, the University of Massachusetts (Lowell and Amherst), Northeastern University, Stonehill College and Suffolk University.
He is a retired director or trustee of numerous boards, including SRA International Inc., John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, and Digital Equipment Corporation. He is a member of several organizations including the State Advisory Board of the Salvation Army, the Executive Committee of the United Ways of Eastern New England, and the Board of Overseers of the Museum of Science.
Tom and his wife, Gertrude, reside in Weston, Massachusetts. They have four children and 11 grandchildren.
