Math Service Opportunities

Gordon students have a wide variety of options for using their math skills in service to the Gordon community and the wider North Shore area. There are many ways to volunteer, as well as a number of paid positions.

  • Volunteer:
    • The College Bound program provides a safe environment for tutoring, learning, and fun on our campus for younger school students. Many math and education double majors have provided leadership for this program.
    • If you desire to serve in an urban environment, the Gordon in Lynn program has many other community partners with need for students with math ability. Some examples of programs math students and faculty have helped with include the New American Center, the Ford School, and others.
      • For example, in Spring and Fall 2012 six Gordon mathematics students provided math exploration events for middle school girls at Girls, Inc. of Lynn.  This has since been awarded a grant to form longer-term relationships and mentoring.
  • Service-Learning:
    • The department is beginning to experiment with opportunities combining real curricular content with service to the community. Faculty encourage feedback with respect to this initiative!
    • Several students did an in-class project for the City of Lynn police department for Operations Research.
    • Calculus II students sometimes have an option involving tutoring students taking courses preparatory to calculus in Lynn, working with several different community partners.
  • Paid:
    • Most 100- and 200-level courses have grader positions as a work-study job; generally, if you do well in a course and would enjoy solidifying your skills, you can ask the instructor if there is a need for a grader.
    • For students with exceptional math skills and compassion, the Academic Support Center has a limited number of paid math tutor positions.

Throughout the year, announcements for other volunteer opportunities often appear, as well as occasional needs for individual tutoring in the immediate North Shore area. Watch your email inbox.
