R Judson Carlberg, Ph.D., came to Gordon in 1976 and served as dean of faculty and director of development before being named Gordon's seventh president in 1992. Under his leadership the College has experienced significant growth in programs, enrollment and physical plant. He is currently working with the Board of Trustees in forging a vision for Gordon that is increasingly urban and global.

Fall 2009
Dear Gordon Community,
Certain faces always stand out to me at the start of a new year. The painfully shy, homesick faces of some of our new students. The more confident faces of returning students, some of whom shriek ear-piercing greetings just outside my windows as they spot friends across the quad. Read More...

"Reflecting the Light of Christ"
President R. Judson Carlberg
Chapel Address, September 2009
The text message from my son was short and direct. “They’re in!”
Chad, who owns a business on Gloucester’s inner harbor, had just looked out his office window and spotted striped bass churning the water as they feasted on small bait fish. He grabbed his cell phone and flashed the report to me as I was heading home. Read more...

Dear Gordon Students,
Finally, the spring flowers are blooming! We've officially entered that time of year when final exams have begun, the semester is coming to an end and graduation as well as summer plans are on the horizon. But it's also a time when many of us gather and reflect over the previous academic semesters. Read more...

Dr. Carlberg's "Up Front" Essays in STILLPOINT, the Magazine of Gordon College
When I was just 35 years old, I came to Gordon College to interview as dean of the faculty. As part of that process, I met with the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees, a group of powerful, well-known men of faith—and at that time they were all men—each highly influential in his particular sphere. Though he was one of the most powerful among them, Tom Phillips made a point of sitting with me at lunch that day and asking me wonderful questions about my background and about my dream of being at Gordon. I was immediately struck by his personal interest, and he sold Gordon College to me.

President's Report
Adoniram Judson (1788-1850)*, a true pioneer among missionaries, paid the campus a surprise visit this spring. Looking eerily similar to longtime professor of English, Dr. Peter Stine, the elderly missionary graced the chapel stage during We Are Gordon-a lively and spiritually uplifting celebration of God's work at Gordon College. The event paid tribute to our past, affirmed the accomplishments of the present, and looked ahead to our promising future. Read more...
President Carlberg: Chapel Address, Nov 24, 2008
We need to count our amazing blessings this Thanksgiving and acknowledge the God from whom they flow. And if we let it, a moment of gratitude at Thanksgiving might tumble us into generosity. Maybe you don't have extra resources right now, but you do have time and talent. Perhaps you could be a volunteer, as so many Gordon students have chosen to be, in places like Lynn and Boston, or in communities where you make your homes. Take time to listen to the worries of others; pray with them, and then share your own worries and let them pray with you.
Each of us is called to be courageous in these tough times. Psalm 37 gives me the faith to go on, even in the wee hours of the morning when I am prone to fret the most. I am inspired to trust and to do good, and I hope you will be too.
