Orientation Student Staff

Orientation Core Staff & Orientation Coordinator(s)
Essential Responsibilities—Core Staff are responsible for planning, organizing and delivering programs and activities before and during Orientation Week and are assigned based on their unique strengths and abilities. These include pre-orientation activities, Move-In Day, Family Day, Boston Day, Academic Day and Student Life Day, as well as the annual Scottie Faire coordination and other events. Transfer Orientation, International Student Orientation, Parent Orientation, and other areas of focus are also included in Core Staff responsibilities. Core Staff do advance planning, O-Crew student training and supervision, and manage multiple aspects of the Orientation program at the point of service to new students and families. It is an excellent comprehensive student leadership position and internship credit can be arranged for students who qualify.

Requirements for Core Staff and Orientation Coordinator candidates:

  • Distinct evidence of Christian Character and Commitment
  • Must be in good standing with the college (including CL&W requirements)
  • Must have participated in “O-Crew" as a Crew Leader or as a member of the “Support Team,” or demonstrate a comparable level of experiences related to executing a multi-dimensional Orientation program.
  •  Must close to completing at least their second year, and have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher

Required knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • Strong general computer proficiency (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Blackboard, scanning,).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to occasionally speak in public.
  • Ability to relate in a courteous and professional manner with students, faculty, and staff at all levels of the college community. Excellent organizational skills and experience.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • Preferred knowledge, skills and experiences: Cross-cultural experience; Web design and editing; Familiarity with social media and its trends

Orientation O-Staff Crew Leaders and Support Team
Essential Responsibilities—Orientation Crew Leaders (O-Crew) are responsible for organizing and directly delivering programs and activities before and during Orientation Week to aid new students in their transition to Gordon, and are assigned based on their unique strengths and abilities. These include one-on-one and small-group (Crews) sessions and experiences: pre-orientation activities, Move-In Day, Family Day, Boston Day, Academic Day and Student Life Day, as well as the annual Scottie Faire coordination and other events. Transfer Orientation, International Student Orientation, Parent Orientation, and other areas of focus are also included in O-Crew responsibilities. O-Crew members are usually the first ambassadors that a new student or their parent meets in their Orientation Welcome to campus—it is an important relationship for that new student in their transition!

Some O-Crew serve in a Support Team role, where volunteers with gifts and strengths in logistics, hospitality and service, can help make new students and families feel welcome!

Requirements for O-Crew & Support Team candidates:

  • Distinct evidence of Christian Character and Commitment
  • Must be in good standing with the college (including CL&W requirements)
  • Must close to completing at least their first year, and have a cumulative 2.50 GPA or higher
  • A welcoming spirit of hospitality and an enthusiasm for Gordon!

Required knowledge, skills and abilities, and those we help develop:

  • Confident oral and written communication skills, including the ability to occasionally speak in public.
  • Ability to relate in a courteous and professional manner with students, faculty, and staff at all levels of the college community.
  • Ability to work independently or in small teams with a positive spirit.
  • Preferred knowledge, skills and experiences: Cross-cultural experience; Familiarity with social media and its trends
