DR. MARY MONTGOMERY KOPPEL
Assistant Professor of Music - Composition, Music History, Instrumentation & Arranging, Songwriting for Worship.
Mary Montgomery Koppel's newest piece, "Mother of Exiles," will be premiered by Lorelei Ensemble on June 10 (8 p.m.) and June 11 (4 p.m.) in Marsh Chapel at Boston University.
Montgomery Koppel shares - "On January 29 of this year, Beth Willer reached out to me to ask if I would be interested in setting the inscription on the Statue of Liberty for Lorelei Ensemble. In America's current political and cultural climate, I can think of no poem more timely and timeless. I said yes immediately. I aimed in my setting to convey the simple but powerful message in the comforting, nurturing tone of Emma Lazarus' original poem. Let us all remember these words, striking and compelling now as they were back in 1883 when they were first heard and read, as calling us to empathy, charity and openness. For my part, I will be donating all proceeds from the creation of the piece to the International Rescue Committee. I invite you to join me in supporting efforts to help those in need around the world."
