Composition Concentration Courses

Concentrations

Students majoring in Music (BA) may elect to complete a concentration in Composition. These courses will count towards the music electives requirement in the major.

  • MUS 218 - Composition I (Credits: 2)
  • MUS 219 - Composition II (Credits: 2)
  • MUS 346 - Instrumentation and Arranging (Credits: 2)
  • MUS 030 - Applied: Composition (Credits: 2, 6 credits required)
     

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC

Students pursuing this degree must complete the following courses (124 credits) plus:

The full Core Curriculum (the core Fine Arts requirement must be fulfilled by a non-music Fine Arts core option.)

  • MUS 211 - Music Theory I (Credits: 3)
  • MUS 212 - Music Theory II (Credits: 3)
  • MUL 211 - Music Theory Labs I (Credits: 1)
  • MUL 212 - Music Theory Labs II (Credits: 1)
  • MUS 226 - Music History and Literature I (Credits: 4)
  • MUS 326 - Music History and Literature II (Credits: 4)
  • MUS 311 - Music Theory III (Credits: 3)
  • MUL 311 - Music Theory Labs III (Credits: 1)
  • MUS 315 - 20th-Century Techniques (Credits: 4)
  • MUS 491 - Senior Seminar I (Credits: 2)
  • MUS 492 - Senior Seminar II (Credits: 2)
  • Applied music (12 credits on one instrument, including 2 semesters of piano proficiency as applicable)
  • Ensemble requirement (see “Ensemble Requirement” below - maximum of 6 semesters taken for credit)*
  • Pass piano and voice proficiency examinations
  • Music electives (minimum 6 credits)*
  • Additional liberal arts courses (24 credits outside of music)


Ensemble Requirement

Eight semesters of ensemble participation are required. The following ensembles may be applied:

MUS 250 - College Choir (Credits: 0 or 1 variable credit)
MUS 251 - Symphonic Band (Credits: 0 or 1 variable credit)
MUS 252 - Men's Choir (Credits:0 or 1 variable credit)
MUS 253 - Gordon Symphony Orchestra (Credits:0 or 1 variable credit)
MUS 254 - Women's Choir (Credits: 0 or 1 variable credit)
MUS 258 - Wind Ensemble (Credits: 0 or 1 variable credit)
