We are mindful of the fact that learning must be rooted in a particular place and context and that as Christians, the greatest commandment is to love God and our neighbor. Local outreach is an integral part of the learning experience and student life at Gordon and there are opportunities for this to happen both within the classroom and outside of it. All of these local opportunities are offered through the Office of Community Engagement.
Outreach Teams are groups of students leading their peers in volunteer service and ministry. These co-curricular opportunities are available throughout the entire North Shore and Greater Boston area.
Gordon in Lynn is an exciting partnership between Gordon College and our closest urban neighbor, the city of Lynn. GIL focus on weekly academically-based service-learning (ABSL) opportunities, primarily through the freshman Great Conversation service-learning classes where over half of the freshman class come to Lynn each week for tutoring and mentoring youth or assisting with adult ESL classes (English as a Second Language). In addition, GIL continues to expand its ABSL work in upper-level classes through contextual research projects, experiential learning opportunities, and internships.
College Bound is an education/enrichment program for children from Lynn's Curwin Circle, a subsidized housing development. Gordon students tutor and mentor children from kindergarten through middle school. College Bound partners with the national federal work-study program, America Reads, and is administered through the Office of Community Engagement and Student Employment.
