The following is meant to be a guide for the types of things that will be built into your weekly schedule. We recognize that individual schedules will vary, and we will all need to be somewhat flexible with schedule management. However, in general, the following are required:
GIB Thursdays: Thursdays, beginning 1/23/14, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., should be reserved for GIB program activities (no exceptions without permission), as follows:
Common Residence Meals: Residences will decide on two additional evening meals that will be taken in common. One of those evening meals should also function as a formal “house meeting” where issues related to living together in community are discussed.
Internship: All students in the program are required to be registered for between 4-12 credits of internship/practicum. According to college policy, students must be “on the job” for a minimum of 28 hours for each credit of internship earned. For practicum placement, the requirements vary. This means scheduling between 12 and 32 hours per week of work at your placement site. DO NOT SCHEDULE INTERNSHIP HOURS ON THURSDAYS.
Other Classes: Students (other than practicum students) usually take another 6-8 credits of coursework during the semester. Many (but not all) of the Boston-area college and university placements are in evening classes. Again, we should avoid scheduling a class that meets on Thursdays between 8AM and 5PM.
Orientation: At the beginning of the semester (1/15-16) we will take a few days to get to know the city, its history, transportation systems, and neighborhoods. On Friday, 1/17 we will go out to Sutton, MA and spend the day together in “retreat mode”—resting, relaxing and getting to know one another. We’ll return on Saturday and spend a few hours that afternoon in a community work project. Sunday and Monday (1/19-20) is Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday—no classes and no formal activities in the program. You should plan to begin your internship on Tuesday, 1/21. Our first GIB Thursday is on 1/23. (And we’re launched!) Again on March 1-2 we'll get out to Sutton and take some time to evaluate and refresh ourselves.
On Your Own: We don’t dictate the following, but you should be thinking about these:
