Student Government Shows Support for Student Research

WENHAM, MA—On Thursday, May 5, 2011, the Gordon College Student Government voted to designate the remaining funds of the 2010–2011 Gordon College Student Association’s (GCSA) account towards academic related student grants and research.

This money will be available to students who have the opportunity to present undergraduate research at conferences but do not have the adequate funds to do so. Students will be able to use this money to cover expenses such as transportation, accommodations, and conference fees. These funds will be available as early as fall 2011.

Students interested in a Student Government research grant must enter into an application and approval process before any money is designated. Requirements for the grant include acceptance into a conference, at least a 3.25 GPA in their Department Major, and at least a cumulative GPA of a 3.0. They must also have the approval of their Department Chair.

The 2010–2011 Student Government identified that this was an evident student need within the institution. Throughout the school year students have been offered opportunities to further their undergraduate endeavors, however, without the proper funding, they have struggled to do so.

The Student Government believes that this decision will enhance the pursuit of scholarship for students at Gordon College and hopes to have set a precedent for future GCSA administrations, as well as draw the attention of the Gordon College administration to this student need.

The GCSA Student Government exists to be the official, representative voice of the students to the administration, faculty, staff, and trustees of the College, and to outside concerns; and the overseeing administration for all student organizations chartered by the GCSA.
