Morning Session - Helping Teenagers in Crisis
Youth workers spend more and more time helping kids and families navigate difficult and sometimes life-threatening issues like suicide, eating disorders, drugs, divorce, cutting, sexual identity, and bullying yet very few feel adequately prepared.
Learn how to:
1. Become Safe People and Provide Safe Places
2. Talk About Unsafe Things: Address Issues We’d Prefer to Avoid
3. Be ALERT: Recognize and Assess Levels of Risk
4. Circle the Wagons: Connect Hurting Kids to Helping Resources.
Afternoon Session - Be A Lifesaver – Helping Suicidal Adolescents
Thousands of teenagers contemplate, hundreds attempt and many complete the act of suicide every day in America. A horrifyingly large number of these young people worship in our churches every Sunday, attend youth group activities regularly, and participate on leadership teams, mission experiences and outreach events. Yet the “good news” doesn’t seem “good enough” to help them cope with life in the here and now.
Learn how to:
1. Understand the Complexities of Suicidal Behavior
2. Identify and Provide Help for Suicidal Youth
3. Appropriately respond when a suicide occurs
4. Forge preventive partnerships with parents and schools
5. Become Aware of Internet, Print and Media resources
