ENG/PHI271: WAR AND PEACE: A LITERARY & PHILOSOPHICAL ENCOUNTER WITH SOUTHEASTERN EUROPE
From May 17-June 3, 2009 this course will explore the themes of war and peace as depicted in modern and contemporary Balkan literature and as understood from a broader philosophical perspective. The readings assigned will follow this twofold objective, and students will simultaneously read and discuss literary texts. Seminar leaders Petra and James Taylor will direct the program.

Course Format
Students electing to go on this international seminar can choose to take one of the following two courses for 4 credits:
In addition to taking the course of their choice, students are welcome to attend the lectures of the other course. As the class travels throughout Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, students will have the opportunity to see for themselves how the landscape of conflict has shaped both literary examinations of war and peace and contemporary life in Southeastern Europe.
