Barrington Lab Equipment Center

All students currently enrolled in production courses through the Communication Arts Department have access to equipment and facilities through The Barrington Lab Equipment Center to fulfill their class assignments.

Equipment Distribution Policies and Procedures (PDF)


The department strictly prohibits borrowing Equipment or using lab facilities for non-academic use. Students may not use equipment or facilities for projects for co-curricular organizations unless granted approval by first submitting a COMM ARTS EQUIPMENT REQUEST (attached below) form to the Communication Arts Department Chair, Rini Cobbey. Approvals of equipment requests are solely at the discretion of the department chair.

 Non-Semester Equipment Use


Special permission for non-academic projects and further development of school projects may be granted to select students for use of Barrington Media Equipment during Winter and Summer breaks based on the following criteria:

• Quality of cinematic form and technique
• Originality of filmmaker's voice, vision, and point-of-view
• Resonance and power of the film's core idea or story
• Feasibility of production

Complete this form, and return to the Production Facilities Manager, Jean-Paul DiSciscio, for review by the Communication Arts Department Faculty at least 30 days before production is slated to begin.

Students enrolled in Production Courses are strongly encouraged to attend Open Lab Hours with Jean-Paul DiSciscio (Equipment Manager) during office hours.

WHERE IS THE LAB?

  • BCA 228 is located in Barrington Center for the Arts, 2nd floor, at the top of the stairs.

WHO USES THE LAB?

  • The BCA lab is NOT a public lab.
  • It is strictly for use by Design and Production Courses, and other Fine Arts students who pay a lab fee.
  • Academic projects always take precedence over other projects.
  • The lab can NOT be used for personal profit. Examples include:
    • getting paid to film and edit a friend's wedding video
    • creating and getting paid for a brochure for a friend's business
    • creating and getting paid for web design and creation

WHAT WILL I FIND THERE?

  • The lab has 16 iMacs, 22" screens.
  • Software:
    • Mac OS X Leopard
    • Adobe CS5 (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop)
    • Adobe Lightroom 3
    • Final Cut Pro
    • Final Draft 8
  • Hardware:
    • 2 Epson Perfection Scanners (for documents, negatives, and slides)
    • 1 color printer (for Graphic Design courses)
    • 4 external hard drives for saving projects (must remain in the lab)
    • Headphones at each station
    • 2 image converters for capturing video
    • Power strips at each station for plugging in additional hardware (cameras, etc.)
    • Various cables for connecting equipment
