Compass FAQs

Who can apply?
Most students apply as high school juniors and participate in the Compass Program during the summer between their junior and senior years. Students who have just completed their senior year are also encouraged to apply. Current high school freshman and sophomores are encouraged to do Equip instead.

When is the Compass Program?
In 2018, Compass will happen from June 27 through July 26.

When are applications due?
Applications are due by February 28, 2018. There is no charge to apply. If you apply before January 31 and are chosen to participate, you will receive a discount on the cost of the program.

When will I know if I have been selected?
All applications received by February 15 will be considered, and admissions decisions will be mailed by the end of March. Although we do not have room for everyone, we take as many qualified applicants as we can into the program. We never know how many applications we will receive, so don’t hesitate to apply!

How much does it cost?
Students who apply by January 31 are asked to raise $3,700 towards the cost of their trip. Students who apply by February 28 are asked to raise $3,900. This covers all program costs (the Wilderness Expedition to New York, the Theological Expedition at Gordon College and the Ministry Expedition overseas), food and lodging for the entire program (except for two travel days), overseas airfare and much more.

In addition, we ask students to seek an additional $500 towards the cost of the program from their sending churches.

Where do we go overseas and what do we do there?
The goal of the overseas expedition is to live our calling to be missional Christ-followers by performing a specific service. These projects are planned with in-country partners.

Past Compass cohorts have traveled to locations such as Mexico, Costa Rica and Nicaragua. In 2018, the ministry expedition will take place in Iceland.

While overseas, students will work with local ministry partners in the capital city of Reykjavik. Learn more about our Ministry Partners

Can I do fundraising to help pay for the trip?
Yes. Compass provides fundraising tools, including individualized online fundraising pages.

How do students apply?
Visit the application page to download an application or begin the online application. Don't wait until the last minute. The application takes some time and effort, but it is very doable.

How can I recommend a student for Compass?
Great question! You can recommend a student using the form below.

How do I choose a mentor?
Mentorship is a required part of the Compass application. If you are accepted into the program, then you commit to three years of mentorship. So it’s important that you find a mentor who will help you on your journey.

Below are some tips for selecting a mentor. If you still have questions about the process, then please email us or give us a call. We’re here to help!

A good mentor should be:

  • Someone you know
  • Older than you, by at least a few years
  • Outside your immediate family
  • Of the same gender as you
  • Involved in a local church (it doesn’t necessarily have to be your church)
  • Able to commit to mentoring you for three years
  • Someone you respect and admire for their walk with the Lord
  • Someone you want to spend more time talking with and getting to know
  • Someone who knows about the Compass Program (if they don’t, you can send them to our website to get to know it!)
  • Someone who currently lives near you, or who you are sure will be able to communicate over a long distance (if/when students go to college, most mentor relationships are long-distance, but it’s preferable that mentors and students live nearby to one another for the first year)
