What is College Bound? College Bound is a Gordon run program that partners with the Lynn Housing Authority to provide homework help and enrichment programming to children from Curwin Circle, a low-income housing community in Lynn. Through tutoring and enrichment activities, children from Curwin are given the academic resources necessary to be positive and active members of their communities, and to see the possibility of college in the future. Through tutoring and mentoring, Gordon students are challenged to grow in leadership and service. The College Bound interns provide the oversight and direction for this exciting program.
Tutor Responsibilities: Only Gordon students who qualify for federal work study are eligible to apply to be a tutor. In addition to having an interest in urban education, tutors are expected to provide homework help, organize academic enrichment activities, attend an orientation program (as well as various scheduled trainings throughout the year), in addition to maintaining a positive and respectful relationship with the children at all times.
Intern Responsibilities: Upper classmen can apply to be a College Bound intern generally in the spring as we prefer a year-long commitment. Interns are paid and give 8-10 hours per week preparing lesson plans, overseeing the tutors, managing the program as well as working with the youth. In addition, interns receive training and mentoring in the field of urban education and leadership development.
How Can I get Involved? At the start of each semester applications will be reviewed and 30 tutors hired. Most interns are hired in the spring for the following fall but occasionally a spot is open for the spring. If you are interested in getting involved either as a tutor or as an intern, please email the Director of College Bound, Jennifer Brink, with your interest.
INTERN APPLICATIONS are due Friday, March 23rd. Applications are availabe in the CSD office or through emailing the director, Jennifer Brink.
